*******
#33Ezekiel Raideric. You were almost born in the dark - when the power went out - but the light came back on just as you emerged into the world at 10:58 p.m. on October 28, 2012. You mom and I had already had a chance to get to know each other - but what a joy to watch her and your dad rejoice in the blessing of a son. Light is your theme little one. May you shine to show others the Truth while being led by the Light of the world!
*******
#32 Aryana Jean. 1:45 a.m. on October 23, 2012 was your big day. Your mom did great in helping you out. You're your own person - uniquely created by the Maker of the Universe. Loved and care for by Him - Let Him carry your worries and burdens and rejoice with you in hope.
*******
#31 Jewel Shine. You arrived just on time at 8:38 a.m. on October 13, 2012. Your mom was a strong first-timer and you cooperated well. Your name is beautiful and so are you - may you trust early and shine so that all can see the love of the Lord.
*******
#30 Suzette. This baby girl joined us at 4:54 a.m. on September 25, 2012 after a long night of labor. But hard work pays off - and this payoff was sweet! Trust God sweet Suzette and it will go well with you all the days of your life.
*******
#29 Baby Girl. Your coming and going will be blessed. I was blessed to be a part of your first moments: 3:16 a.m., September 17, 2012. This baby is a member of the Badjao tribe - a semi-nomadic, sea-gypsy group.
*******
#28 Zac. Your mama is strong - and you are her son. Welcome to earth: 12:05 p.m. September 14, 2012. From my perspective, you and your mom make a pretty good team. Let God be a part of that team, and He will never give you more than you can handle.
(And thanks for allowing me to join the two-babies in one shift club -
you made it pretty easy for me!)

#27 Vince Chan gave his mom a birth to remember - coming "sunny-side up" makes for a bit more drama and pain, but we were all glad to meet him at 7:15 a.m. on September 14, 2012. You have great purpose sweet boy. Live for God - not for the world.
*******
#26 Jayson Jr. I thought you might make your grand entrance on the floor of the clinic rather than in the birth room - but your mom made it to the bed just in time. It was a joy to get to know your mom before you were born when she came for prenatals, and also to meet your dad and kuya (older brother) after you were born. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go! (Joshua 1:9)
*******
#25 Kris Lawrence. Some starts are a little rougher than others, but thankful that the Lord has had his hand on you from before your birth. You can rest knowing that He is your deliverer!
Happy Birthday: August 25, 2012 at 9:50 a.m. Praying your race is good to the end!
*******
#24 Baby Girl Humi. Your mom is Darling - and you are too! The world - including your lola and auntie - was eager to greet you at 5:23 p.m. on August 22, 2012. Keep giving those sweet smiles and know that your beauty is from the Lord - draw close to Him sweet girl.
*******

#23 Nathan. Finally a boy! You must be a night owl: 1:15 a.m. on August 20, 2012 you decided to greet the world. Your mom had a close to a "painless" labor as I've seen. Her first painful contraction came at 12:50 p.m. What a blessing you are! You will call your mother blessed, and you too will be blessed.
*******

#22 Leirah Jane. Your special day: 6:50 p.m., June 28, 2012. Strong mama, strong baby! You had quite an audience at your birth - along with your midwife team - a couple teenagers from the U.S. stopped by to see childbirth up close and personal. Your debut had them so excited - I believe you got extra cuddles from those same young ladies! May the Lord bless you and keep you!
*******

#21 Sarah Joy. Welcome to earth sweet girl. Born at 8:19 p.m. on June 17, 2012 - Father's Day. I pray you are a Joy to your mother. {A few days before I had the privilege of helping this mom/baby, I was driving and thinking about what I would name a baby if anyone ever asked - I thought "Sara Joy". A few days later, she showed up - but God picked out her name, not me!} May the Lord be a Father unto you all the days of your life!
*******
#20 Happy Birthday Mizzy - June 12, 2012. Your sweet, experienced mother came to the clinic just in time to breathe through a few contractions and then let you come into the world at 10:40 p.m. You were a big baby (for the Philippines) - a whoppin' 7 lb 13 oz.
*******
#19 Johanna arrived on May 14, 2012 at 4:48 p.m. Her mama, Rose, labored like a champ. She showed no first-time jitters and focused through contractions and pushed baby out with ease. Johanna weighed in at 5 lb 5 oz. Happy Birthday Baby Johanna!
*******
#18 Baby Maica (Micah) was born on Mother's Day - May 13, 2012 at 11:18 a.m. I met her mother, Marecho, on my trip to the bukid in April. Bukid mamas don't usually come to the city to have babies, but because of a large, unreparied tear at her last birth, she asked if we could repair it after the birth of this baby. When we agreed, she decided to come to Mercy. She arrived a week before her due date and stayed at a local church for two weeks. Her water broke early in the morning, and she came to Mercy. I had worked night shift, but stayed to help her through her labor as I had agreed to be her midwife whenever she went into labor. I monitored her for a couple of hours before taking a much needed cat-nap while my friend Brenda took care of Marecho. She labored like a pro - this is her third baby. Baby Maica weighed 5 lb 8 oz.
*******

#17 Rollie Kiser James arrived on May 5, 2012 at 6:28 p.m. His mama, Liemyrone, would tell you she was surprised at how much pain is involved in having a baby. I (along with a great team) was blessed to labor with her for several hours helping her through each contraction. She was so interested in the process, but definitely not excited about the pain. Rollie weighed in at 6 lb 4 oz. I was excited to realize that Liemyrone and I had met previously while I was shopping at a nearby mall where she worked - It was a kiss from God to get to deliver her baby.
*******
#16 Isabella Monica gave us a little scare. Her mama, Margaret, pushed for quite a while when baby Isabella finally made her debut she needed a little help getting going, but she did great after that. Just to be sure, we referred her to the doctor for further check and she is just fine! She weighed in at 5 lb 8 oz and arrived on April 27, 2012 at 10:44 a.m.
*******
#15 Little Harvey arrived on April 22, 2012 at 4:47 p.m. His mama, Analie, was patient and focused as it took a while in the pushing phase. She never gave up. She was rewarded with an 8 lb 8 oz bouncing baby boy (quite large for this part of the world). Both mom and baby did great.
*******
#14 Julienor was quiet and strong throughout her labor, and she was in love with her baby as soon as she met him - Prince Diamond joined us at 6:28 p.m. on April 7, 2012 weighing 5 lb 5 oz. He came with a double cord wrap - but handled it like a champ. Happy Birthday Baby Diamond!
*******

#13 Baby Ezekial arrived at10:24 p.m. on April 1, 2012 weighing in at 6 lb 4 oz. Genelyn, his sweet mom, worked hard and had amazing focus as she labored with her son. Toward the end, she stood and labored to get her labor going as it had started to slow down. Soon we realized it was time to push. She transitioned to the bed and pushed well. Baby came with a cord around its neck two times and a hand up by his head, but he was just fine - as was mom. Happy Birthday Baby Ezekial!
*******
#12 Some babies have a harder time making their way out. Sweet baby Cyrine definitely gave her mama, Stella, a run for her money. But even after lots of vomiting, an IV, a catheter, and a long pushing phase, Stella was still smiling, sweet, and grateful when we placed her new daughter on her tummy. March 25, 2012 was a hard day - but as any mom will tell you, good things come out from enduring a little pain/discomfort.
I was really proud of Stella, and super excited to meet baby Cyrine at 7:45 p.m.
*******
#11 Baby Lara joined us on March 9, 2012 weighing 5 lb 8 oz. I was "endorsed" - meaning I took over the care of her mother, Mercy, when I came on shift at 2 p.m. This first-time mom surprised us all when she was ready to push just a few minutes later - after a grand total of 5 hours of labor and 11 minutes of pushing, baby Lara arrived at 2:41 p.m. Mercy was amazing - and Lara is her sweet reward. Her bana (husband), Marvin, was quite surprised when he arrived at the clinic after the birth of his first baby.
I loved having Mercy deliver at the beginning of my shift as it meant I got to do all the follow-up care after the birth - newborn exam/bath, continued care of mom/baby. We do our best to do all we can before endorsing to the next shift - but sometimes there simply isn't time to get it all done. Mercy and I really hit it off, and I'm still enjoying seeing her, her bana (husband) Marvin, when they bring Lara in for her well-baby checks. My favorite part of being a midwife is being able to share information with the mamas. I remember being so hungry for information - and now it is my joy to help make the transition to motherhood a little easier.

#10 A sweet baby girl was welcomed by mom and dad on March 3, 3012 at 8:02 p.m. What a fun birth. The mama, Jane, labored so well. She was the quiet type. She simply walked around, stopping occasionally to lean against the wall when a contraction came. After several hours, she got a little "pushy", so we went to the bed to rest a little. I asked her to get in hands-and-knees position as her back labor was really painful. So she leaned on our big pillow and breathed through some more contractions as I rubbed her lower back. Finally, the urge to push was overwhelming. So we tried a trial push to check for progress. Baby was out within two minutes! My first full hands-and-knees catch - it was great! I hope more mom's try this as it really lessens the chance of a tear. This sweet baby girl has a "nuchal hand" (her hand was up by her face during delivery) which often leads to a tear because of the increased diameter - but there were no problems for this mama!
*******
#9 This beautiful baby girl arrived on February 26, 2012 at 2:29 p.m. She is what we call an endorsement baby. The day shift endorsed her laboring mama, Carla Mae, to me at 2 p.m. and soon she was ready to push. The midwife who had labored with Carla Mae all morning stayed to assist me in the birth of this sweet girl. Carla Mae was a champ - she definitely did not like the pain, but she focused and pushed well. She made me laugh when her baby was only minutes old and she asked me about family planning methods. This wide-eyed girl weighed in at 6 lbs even upping her ate (ahh-tay - big sister) by a full pound. Happy Birthday sweet baby girl!
*******
#8 Sweet Michelle was one of three babies who arrived at the clinic within 5 minutes early on Febuary 19, 2012. Vicenta came in around 4:15 a.m. stating she was in labor, but you could have fooled me. I checked her in and sat with her for more than 20 minutes and only a couple of times wondered if she might be having a contraction. She was definitely my most stoic mama so far. We decided to wait to do the IE (internal exam) until she got more active. I prepared to help another midwife with an impending birth. While setting up, I hear my patient say quietly "gawas" which means coming out. I ran in to find her water had broken and she was ready to push. At the same time a jeepney came honking outside with a new baby inside. We were hoppin'! Hannah (the midwife I was helping - and the one you see above) caught her baby at 5:19 and mine came at 5:20 a.m. This is the second Badjao mama I've had the joy of helping. God has been giving me unusual favor among this group of people. Happy Birthday Baby Girl!

#7 Krys Pitt put the boys in lead on my baby count. We thought his parent's might name him Valentino as he arrived on Valentine's Day at 7:59 a.m. But after his mama gave us a little scare by bleeding too much, his dad decided to name his new little boy after the supervisor who took such good care of his wife - a fitting tribute to be sure. Praise the Lord for wisdom in this birth.
Thank you Lord that this baby still has a mama to love on him. Happy Birthday Krys Pitt!

#6 Kirstein Jan made her debut on January 29, 2012. This sweet girl was smiley from the get-go - I think she takes after her equally adorable mama Emma. Kirstein arrived at 6:41 p.m. at the clinic, just a few minutes after her mom and dad did. I've had fun watching her grow the last few weeks as I've done her well baby checks. Hooray for healthy baby girls! Happy Birthday Kirstein!

#5 Sweet Myztdev (pronounced
Miss Dev) showed us all of her 7 lb 1 oz beautiful self at 4:24 a.m. on
January 18, 2012. This first-time mom acted like an old pro. I love
it when a mom chooses an alternative birth position - and this sweet
mama did great while standing and then squatting in labor. The deep
squat proved successful and mama did an amazing job breathing her baby
out! No first time jitters here! We were all instantly in love with
this alert little girl.

#4 Julani took
his first breath at 2:59 a.m. on January 8, 2012. Wt: 6 lb 4 oz.
Julani's parents are Badjaw - a particular tribe here. His
mom had us all fooled thinking her labor was going no where fast. In
the five hours I cared for her, her contractions were never closer than
15 minutes apart - sometimes up to 30 minutes - and they never lasted
longer than 20 seconds. We tried all the tricks of stimulating labor -
but every time something started this 5-time mom said no way! So when
she said she was ready to push I wondered. But sure enough, she knows
how her body does labor. Four minutes of pushing and baby was out and
on mom's tummy. My favorite part of this birth (other than welcoming
the new baby, of course) was being asked to pray together with Julani's
mom and her bantay (pronounced: bahn tie. meaning: watcher/helper - a
cool tradition here in the Phils requires every mom to have a bantay -
sometimes its the bana - husband - other times a friend or family
member).

#3 Baby Boy
- Arrived at 6:20 p.m. on December 26, 2011. Wt: 6 lb 14 oz. This
experienced mama made pushing look like a cake walk. I had to run to
keep this baby from landing on the bed. This sweet boy is my sweetest
catch so far - hardly a whimper the entire shift - even when getting his
shots. I bet his 4 big brothers/sisters will help him figure out what
to do! Happy Birthday Baby!
*Sometimes the parents don't decide on a name before my shift is
over - that is the case here. I've been quite surprised at how many
parents here haven't thought about names for their babies - definitely a
cultural difference - maybe due to unfortunate infant mortality?

| Please don't be offended by the BF picture - she isn't. And it's the only one I got of this baby. |
#2 Mildred made
her debut at 6:51 p.m. on December 15, 2011. She made us all breathe a
sigh of relief when all 7 lb 12 oz of her came out crying. Mildred's
big sister was born premature and died shortly after that. So glad
Mildred's mom and dad have a baby to hold. Thank you Jesus for allowing
me the opportunity to minister to this family. Happy Birthday Mildred!
